Solid Waste Management Plan: 2015 Update

Fairfax County is in the process of updating its Solid Waste Management Plan. This plan describes an integrated strategy for the management of trash and recyclables generated by businesses and residents in Fairfax County. The county’s current 20-year plan requires an update in 2015.

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requires that the plan be updated every five years. The revised plan will assist and guide the development of waste reduction, reuse, recycling, collection, transfer and disposal initiatives in Fairfax County from July 2015 – July 2035. It will serve as a strategic planning tool and will include goals to help the solid waste management program achieve environmental and financial sustainability.

Process for Updating the Plan

  • Staff will: revise county demographics (e.g., population growth, waste generation rates)  and identify available disposal capacity for the next 20 years; research alternatives, options  and new technologies for the diversion of waste; and analyze data and findings for use in preparing a draft amendment to the current plan.
  • Staff will hold meetings with residents, businesses and stakeholders to receive input on the plan.
  • After making any revisions to the plan amendment, staff will present the proposal to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
  • A formal public hearing will be held to hear comments about the plan amendment.
  • The final plan amendment will be submitted to the VDEQ in accordance with regulations by June 2015.
