Fairfax County provides street lighting services to the community for the purpose of enhancing public safety. The Planning and Design Division of the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services administers the Fairfax County Streetlight Program.

All the streetlights in Fairfax County are installed, owned, operated, and maintained by the two utility companies servicing the County. In consideration for this service, the County pays a monthly fee based on the number of streetlights in operation. Currently, there are nearly 50,000 streetlights in Fairfax County with approximately 600 new street lights added each year.
