The 2011 Area Plans Review Retrospective was an effort to evaluate the Area Plans Review (APR) process, which is the primary means to regularly review and update the county's Comprehensive Plan. The retrospective evaluated what worked well in the process and if improvements were possible to:
- Expand public outreach
- Provide a more holistic approach to review
- Enhance land use and transportation analysis
The APR Retrospective sought to document the changing nature of APR through input from the community and other stakeholders. The retrospective was endorsed by the county's Planning Commission, an advisory body to the Board of Supervisors on land use decisions related to the county's Comprehensive Plan. The Board of Supervisors also discussed this type of evaluation as part of their 2009 Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Retreat agenda.
How You Can Participate
While the retrosepctive is over, opportunities to participate in the resulting effort Fairfax Forwad are available. As part of this effort, county planners are seeking input from the property owners, neighborhood groups, developers, and other interested community members. There are several ways you can offer feedback at one of the community meetings or submitting comments anonymously, or e-mail your thoughts and comments to county planners
Study Process
The study was conducted using the following timeline:
- Held initial meetings with Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors (February 2011)
- Conducted an online survey (March 2011)
- Hold informational community meetings in each supervisory district (September 2011)
- Develop recommendations for Fairfax Forward (end of 2011)
