2012 Fairfax County Exceptional Design Awards Winners

The design jury for the Fairfax County Exceptional Design Awards Program met July 11 and selected nine entries to receive awards. Entries were judged on four criteria: Exemplifies a superior work of architecture; Incorporates total site design and landscaping; Takes into account the context of the work in relationship to its surroundings; Applies energy and water conservation, and other green building practices. The design awards program is sponsored by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and administered by the County's Department of Planning and Zoning in cooperation with the County Architectural Review Board and the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The purpose of the awards program is to recognize outstanding achievement in the total design of a building and the site and to create an awareness of superior planning and design projects. The 2012 Awards Ceremony was held on October 16, 2012.  The photo at left depicts the presentation of the 2012 awards at the October 16, 2012 Board of Supervisors meeting (click on the photo to view a larger version of the photo). HONOR AWARD: ARCHITECT: OWNER/DEVELOPER: CATEGORY:   YEAR COMPLETED: Photography: Supervisor District: Jury Comments: Fort Belvoir Community Hospital HDR/Dewberry (Joint Venture) U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Norfolk District Institutional 2011 Ari Burling Mount Vernon This design is sweeping and well-choreographed.  The entrance is open, roomy and bright with good courtyards.  This project is LEED Silver and tracking LEED Gold.
HONOR AWARD: ARCHITECT:   OWNER/DEVELOPER:   CATEGORY:   YEAR COMPLETED: Photography: Supervisor District: Jury Comments: Lakefront Residence Moore Architects, PC Alan Kick & Steve Sellick Residential 2011 Anice Hoachlander Mason Natural light comes through at all levels. Transparency from street to lake is wonderful. …appears as a pseudo-tree house.
HONOR AWARD: ARCHITECT:   OWNER/DEVELOPER: CATEGORY:   YEAR COMPLETED:   Photography Supervisor District: Jury Comments: Woodlawn Village Neighborhood Center Torti Gallas & Partners, Inc. Clark Realty Capital LLC Community Benefit Project 2011 Licensed to Clark Realty Capital, LLC Mount Vernon “Wrightian” influence; clean lines and connects the outside with the inside; functional spaces. This work is an architectural gem which creates good functional spaces.
MERIT AWARD: ARCHITECT:   OWNER/DEVELOPER: CATEGORY: YEAR COMPLETED:   Photography: Supervisor District: Jury Comments:   Dolley Madison Library Bowie Gridley Architects Fairfax County Department of Public Works & Environmental Services Institutional 2011 Bowie Gridley Architects; Eric Taylor  Dranesville This work maintained the character of the community on the street side while opening to nature and natural light in the rear of the structure; the green roof is a sustainable feature.
HONORABLE MENTION AWARD: ARCHITECT: OWNER/DEVELOPER: CATEGORY: YEAR COMPLETED: Photography:   Supervisor District: Jury Comments:   Balfour Beatty Construction FOX Architects, LLC Balfour Beatty Construction Office (interior) 2011 Adrian Wilson, Interior Photography, Inc. Braddock This work is very focused on sustainability and light; good use of space; LEED Gold.
HONORABLE MENTION AWARD: ARCHITECT:   Owner/Developer CATEGORY: YEAR COMPLETED: Photography: Supervisor District: Jury Comments:   CurvyGirls Bridal architecture, inc. Bob & Ruth Sutton (owner)/ Atlantic Realty Corporation (dev) Office (interior) 2011 John Cole Sully This interior followed the theme of curve throughout the entire design; good design strategy and nice progression of space.
HONORABLE MENTION AWARD: ARCHITECT: OWNER/DEVELOPER: CATEGORY:    YEAR COMPLETED: Photography: Supervisor District: Jury Comments:   I -66 Transfer Station Operations Center Ritter Architects Fairfax County Department of Public Works & Environmental Services Institutional 2012 Ritter Architects Springfield Gateway building in the transfer complex; created unique design; care was taken to make the building interesting and connected to the site.

Universal design carried throughout; appreciation of concept and form.
