Environmental Excellence Award Recipients
2011
Fairfax County Restoration Project — Organization Award
Recognized for numerous projects that serve to fulfill its mission to “strengthen the relationship between people and nature through community action.” The nomination highlighted:
- A conference for homeowners on the need for and value of watershed stewardship.
- A Schoolyard Greening Project that converted turf areas to forest at a pumping station, providing a living classroom for nearby public schools.
- A Native Tree Discount Coupon program providing for discounts for purchases of native trees at a local nursery.
- A “Reforest Fairfax” tree gifting program through which trees will be planted in the county in honor of friends, family or clients.
- A partnership with a homeowners association on restoration of degraded areas near the I-495 HOT Lanes project.
Fairfax County Department of Vehicle Services — Organization Award
Recognized for its strong environmental steward as an environmentally conscious, forward-looking agency. The nomination highlighted:
- Development and continuing expansion of a hybrid-drive vehicle fleet, including the acquisition of a hybrid hydraulic “launch assist” refuse collection truck.
- Use of grant funding to retrofit school buses with an emerging technology to achieve substantial reductions in emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
- Pursuit of a pilot project to test, on heavy trucks, technologies to reduce engine idling.
- Leadership in countywide efforts, and active contributions to state efforts, to prepare for the commercial introduction of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
- Numerous efforts to reduce the use of resources, release of pollutants and generation of wastes in DVS operations.
