Background on Baileys Crossroads Revitalization
Baileys Crossroads Community Business Center (CBC) is centered at the interchange of Leesburg Pike and Columbia Pike, and fans out along these major arterial streets to include approximately 530 acres.
Because of its strategic location at the interchange of two of the primary commercial and commuter corridors in Fairfax County, the CBC is seen as a gateway to Fairfax County from both Arlington County and the City of Alexandria. The efforts to encourage revitalization in the CBC were started in 1985. Some of the earliest efforts included
- land use and transportation planning studies,
- Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance amendments,
- support of transit initiatives,
- evolution of community participation, and
- physical infrastructure improvements.
In 2006, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Advisory Services Panel studied the Baileys Crossroads area and suggested strategies for revitalizing Baileys Crossroads area into a more urban place, while creating better physical links, and still maintaining compatibility with neighboring districts.
