Temporary Special Permits

A Temporary Special Permit (TSP) may be required for certain temporary outdoor uses and activities per Part 8 of Article 8 of the Fairfax County Zoning Ordinance. Such activities and uses requiring a TSP include: carnivals, festivals, fairs, seasonal sales of such items as pumpkins, Christmas trees, fireworks stands, etc., farmers’ markets, contractors’ and sales/rental offices, associated with new construction, construction material yards and equipment sheds, and promotional events and grand openings of retail merchants. Standards and time limits apply and vary depending upon the activity or use. The TSP application fee is $200.00 and a separate escrow deposit of $100.00 is required for certain activities such as fairs, festivals, and seasonal sales. Two TSP application forms exist:
The Zoning Permit Review Branch (ZPRB) processes and issues TSP applications. Applications may be mailed or delivered to ZPRB and must be received at least 21 days prior to the commencement of the use or activity. If the application is mailed please allow up to two (2) weeks processing time. For further information, please call our office.
