This directory of rental complexes in the Fairfax area is based upon the latest available information, as of September 2005, including the most recent Fairfax County Rental Housing Census and an internet search for rental complexes with accessible units. This directory does not constitute an endorsement of any particular rental complex. It is intended solely as a source of information. The geographic listing is by zip code address, not by general area. For example, look under Alexandria in addition to Kingstowne.
The term “accessible,” as used in this guide, means that the number of apartments listed as accessible for each complex are at least minimally wheelchair accessible, including the entrances to the building and individual apartment, and there are appropriate curb cuts where vehicles would be parked. In some cases, wheelchair access may be in the rear of the building, such as through a patio entrance.
The disability features listed for each apartment are as reported by each respondent in the latest Fairfax County Rental Housing Census, or in response to an inquiry from this office. The user of this directory is encouraged to visit and inspect the unit to determine whether it meets his or her particular needs before signing a lease. For example, a "wide doorway" may not be wide enough for a large power wheelchair. Please note that where the heading “location of accessible units” indicates multi-floors, and “Elevators with Braille” is not indicated, it means the complex has elevators without Braille. People in need of accessible or modified housing are encouraged to know
their rights under the Virginia Uniform Building Code, the Fair Housing
Act (Amendment of 1988), and the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990,
as amended. Questions concerning these may also be referred to the
Disability Services Planning and Development staff. Financial assistance
programs are available to help citizens afford housing. The Fairfax
County Redevelopment and Housing Authority has programs that provide
housing vouchers, rental assistance, and assistance for first-time
homebuyers. The Housing Authority can be reached at 703-385-3662 or TTY
703-385-3578; their Web site can be found at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/rha. In addition, Fairfax County
publishes a “Low and Moderate Income
Housing Guide,” It is also available by contacting the Redevelopment
and Housing Authority or Disability Services Planning and
