How is Fairfax County Creating a Coordinated Community-wide Response?

There are a myriad of efforts under way in Fairfax County to create an effective coordinated community-wide response to domestic violence. First, all of our systems and public and private stakeholders are developing a common vision and awareness of the complex dynamics of domestic violence. Second, our systems and stakeholders are developing processes for the standardized collection of data to help our community better understand the full scope of domestic violence in Fairfax County and to assess the utility and effectiveness of our responses and formal/informal interventions. Third, all of our systems are striving to become more visible, accessible, culturally competent, and accountable.

Individual stakeholders and service providers in our community are also beginning to acknowledge and recognize that one agency alone may be unable to address and respond to all the diverse needs of survivors of domestic violence. Indeed, public and private service providers in Fairfax County are looking beyond their own agency’s mandates to determine what may be helpful and/or necessary to help individual survivors identify their unique needs and achieve their self-defined goals. This means becoming more knowledgeable about what allied professionals and community partners may be able to offer and actively networking, exchanging information and resources, and collaborating with other providers and partners for the benefit of survivors of family abuse. In short, all of our systems and stakeholders are working diligently as a part of a comprehensive, coordinated network of care to promote safety for survivors and to ensure accountability for offenders.

The Domestic Violence Prevention, Policy, and Coordinating Council (DVPPCC)

The Board of Supervisors has established the Fairfax County DVPPCC to guide and facilitate the development and maintenance of our coordinated community-wide response to domestic violence. The DVPPCC, chaired by the County Executive, is comprised of top-level county officials and community leaders, all of whom are actively engaged and solidly committed to making our community safer for all residents. The DVPPCC fosters communication, cooperation, collaboration, and coordination among and between diverse county and community-based stakeholders involved in domestic violence intervention, prevention, and education efforts in Fairfax County.
