2005 Family & Intimate Partner Violence Homicide Report

  • Virginia Homicides: one third were family or intimate partner-related (29.6 percent - 147 victims)

  • Nearly half (47 percent) of all family and intimate partner related homicide victims were killed by an intimate partner

    • eight children saw the homicide

    • five children were attacked and survived

    • five heard the injury being inflicted

    • four found the homicide victim

Virginia Domestic and Sexual Violence Action Alliance

  • Virginia Domestic Violence Service Providers:

    • Responded to 51,652 crisis situations

    • Sheltered 6,796 individuals (3,646 adults and 3,150 children) in emergency residential service programs

    • Turned away 1,898 individuals because programs were full

    • Provided services to 3,267 children

    • Provided advocacy services to 5,812 adults with a focus on education on domestic violence dynamics and safety planning
