Foundation for Appropriate and Immediate Temporary Help (FAITH) Safe and Peaceful Families Project
FAITH is a nonprofit, community-based organization
that provides humanitarian aid to individuals and families in need living
in Northern Virginia. Since 1998, FAITH has helped people of many
religious faiths and cultural/linguistic backgrounds.
FAITH’s primary mission is to provide culturally appropriate, customized care to individuals and families seeking their services. Many clients come to FAITH lacking independent resources and connections to the community. Some are unable to speak English and may need assistance in securing steady and stable employment. FAITH staff actively listens to clients to learn more about their experiences and helps clients to self-identify their needs and goals. Since every situation may be different, FAITH offers support that is specifically tailored to the unique circumstances of each client.
Domestic Violence Direct Services
FAITH’s Safe and Peaceful Families Project provides individualized services to survivors of domestic violence, such as safety planning assistance, information, and education about available county and community-based resources, court accompaniment, legal advocacy, and supportive counseling. FAITH also provides financial and transportation assistance, when needed. A key component of the program helps survivors begin to develop the skills necessary for independent living by matching clients with volunteer mentors who provide ongoing support and financial/budget counseling. FAITH also operates a thrift store and food pantry that are available free of charge to its domestic violence clients for clothing, basic food items, hygiene products, household goods, and other necessary items.
Muslim Men Against Domestic Violence and Community Outreach
FAITH is piloting a program to reach out to Muslim
men through sermons on topics ranging from healthy family relationships
to men and women’s rights and responsibilities in Islam. These
sermons are presented on Fridays at the nine locations of the All Dulles
Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center. Because some men may not attend
the ADAMS Center sermons, those who do participate are strongly
encouraged to reach out to others in the community and to refer men to
Imams for further education and assistance. The Imams offer
one-on-one counseling to men to help them understand their personal
responsibilities in family relationships and to correct any
misinterpretations of the Qur’an. The Imams also help women
understand that since Islam prohibits any form of domestic violence,
options such as leaving the home are perfectly acceptable in order to
keep survivors and their children safe from further abuse.
Other FAITH Programs
Other FAITH services include Islamic Burial Services, Community Events for Orphans, School Supplies and Jacket Drives, Herndon without Hunger, and Ramadan Eid (Islamic Holiday) programs for those who cannot afford to celebrate.
