Tax Exemptions
The following types of vehicle registrations are not subject to car taxes:

Government - Any motor
vehicle owned by the State or any political subdivision or United
States government. Required documentation: Government
registration.

Diplomat - Any motor
vehicle owned and used for personal or official purposes by accredited
consular or diplomatic officers of foreign governments, their family
members and employees, who are nationals of the state by which they are
appointed and are not citizens of the United States. Required
documentation: Diplomatic ID.

Military - Any motor
vehicle normally garaged, stored, or parked in the County or on a
United States military base within the geographic boundaries of the
County and registered in this state or any other jurisdiction whose
owner is on full-time active duty in the military service absent from
his state of residence or domicile may be exempted from local taxation
upon application to DTA. Required documentation: State vehicle
registration, proof of domicile, military orders, military LES, and
photo ID. Beginning November 11, 2009, under the
Military Spouses Residency Relief Act (PL 111-97), a qualifying
spouse who shares domicile with an exempt military service member, and
who resides in Fairfax County in order to live with the service member,
can also qualify for exemption (whether the vehicle is co-owned with
the service member or owned individually by the spouse). Proof of

Daily Rental - Any vehicle
used as a daily rental passenger vehicle. Required documentation: State
Registration showing registration as a daily rental vehicle.
- Tax Relief - Any one vehicle owned by a person who is granted Tax Relief by the County. Required documentation: Proof of approved tax relief status.
