Third Party Processor FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why does Fairfax County use a third party processor for credit card payments?

The use of credit cards is a payment option offered for the convenience of citizens, but there is a cost imposed by most credit card companies that, by county ordinance, must be passed on to the card holder. Whereas Retail Merchants typically absorb this cost, the Fairfax County Code stipulates that, in the payment of taxes, credit card fees (also referred to as convenience fees or merchant fees) must be paid by the card holder, not by the County. Were the County Code to be changed and the fee absorbed, the budget increase in expenditures would be considerable.

In order to offer this convenience and yet comply with credit company by-laws and the county code, we use a third party processor to handle credit card payments.
