Fairfax County operates an emergency low-power AM radio signal at 1670 AM, to provide information to the public during emergencies.

About the System

  • Each radio signal has a coverage area of up to five miles.

  • 11 transmitters provide coverage across the 400-square-mile county.

  • 1670 AM is a non-commercial station licensed by the Federal Communications Commission.

  • On a day-to-day basis, the radio station broadcasts emergency preparedness messages.

  • During emergencies, messages about the situation, and how to stay safe, can be localized or broadcast across the entire system.
