Vehicle Emergency Supply Kit


CarsPrepare for winter driving with these road safety tips.

Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. The following are suggested items:

  • Blanket
  • Cellular phone for use during emergencies and notifying those expecting your arrival in case of weather delays.
  • Clothes with warm, comfortable footwear
  • Duct tape
  • Entertainment (book, crossword puzzle, etc.)
  • First-aid kit 
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Food, such as snack bars
  • Fuel line de-icer (methanol, also called methyl alcohol or methyl hydrate)
  • Gloves - latex or polyurethane
  • Ice scraper and brush
  • Jumper cables
  • Knife
  • Maps
  • Matches and emergency candles. Only use these with a window opened to prevent build-up of carbon monoxide.    
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic bag with seal for waste
  • Radio - battery or hand operated
  • Rain gear
  • Sand, salt or kitty litter
  • Sign to request help
  • Snow shovel
  • Soap
  • Tire chains - check for proper fit
  • Tire inflator and sealer
  • Tow rope
  • Towels
  • Traction mat
  • Warning devices such as flares or emergency lights
  • Water
  • Whistle
  • Windshield wiper fluid appropriate for sub-freezing temperatures
