Pedestrian Safety -- Winter Preparedness Tips

Snow and Cars As most sidewalks are covered with snow and unpassable, here are safety tips for pedestrians and drivers.

Pedestrians

  • Cross the street at marked crosswalks and intersections ONLY
  • Before crossing, look left, right, then left again
  • Use pedestrian pushbuttons
  • Begin crossing the street on “Walk” signal
  • Wear bright colored clothing, as dim, winter light hampers visibility
  • Dusk and dawn are the most dangerous times of the day for pedestrians. If walking or jogging, make sure you walk against the traffic and remember reflective clothing

Drivers

  • Be alert to pedestrians around snowpiles, corners and areas where snow is covering lanes
  • Stay in the confines of your lanes as much as possible
  • Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks
  • Slow down and obey posted speed limits
  • Look before opening your vehicle door
  • Use caution when passing stopped vehicles
