Smoke Alarm Alerts Family to House Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire at approximately 3:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 2, 2005, in the Burke area of Fairfax County. The single-family split-level home is located at 10440 Calumet Grove Drive.

Firefighters saw fire coming from the rear of the home upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 10 minutes. The fire started on the deck and extended to the kitchen and roof areas.

A smoke alarm provided early warning to the family allowing them to escape unharmed. The homeowner had replaced the battery in the smoke alarm the morning before the fire broke out. The family of three adults and one child have been displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Damage is estimate at $65,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. Improper disposal of charcoal ashes caused the fire.
