Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a condominium fire at approximately 1:20 a.m., Friday, August 19, 2005, in the Hybla Valley area of Fairfax County. The two-story condominium is located at 3944 El Camino Place.
Firefighters arrived to find fire visible on the first floor of the structure. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. An adult female was at home when the fire started. The female resident was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The American Red Cross is assisting the one displaced resident.
Damage is estimated at $30,000.
The cause of the fire is determined to be accidental; improper disposal of smoking materials in the bedroom caused the fire.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department would like to remind you of some important SAFETY TIPS when handling smoking materials:
- Completely douse butts and ashes with water before throwing them away as they can smolder and cause a fire.
- NEVER smoke in bed.
- Provide large, deep ashtrays with a center support for smokers. Check furniture for any dropped ashes before going to bed.
- Empty ashes into a fireproof container with water and sand.
- Keep smoking materials away from anything that can burn (i.e., mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, draperies, etc.)
Fairfax County is committed to nondiscrimination on the basis of disability in all county programs, services and activities. Reasonable accommodations will be provided upon request. For information, call 703-246-3801 and TTY 703-285-4419.
