Fairfax County Task Force Deployed to Hurricane Katrina

At 9:20 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2005, Virginia Task Force 1 (VATF1), Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department’s Urban Search and Rescue team, was deployed to assist with search and rescue operations in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The 34 member team arrived in Gulfport, Mississippi, early this morning, August 31 and immediately began coordinating operations with the FEMA Incident Support Team. VATF1 has begun performing search, rescue and reconnaissance missions in the region.
