Fairfax County Fire and Rescue units responded to a barn fire at approximately 2:40 a.m., Wednesday, October 26, 2005, in the Clifton area of Fairfax County. The barn is located at 6429 Clifton Road.
Firefighters saw fire and smoke coming from a large barn upon arrival. The wooden barn, approximately 60 feet by 40 feet, was fully involved with fire. Ten horses were stabled in the barn. All the horses perished in the fire.
Firefighters used water from four fire engines and two water tankers to extinguish the fire. Units from Clifton, Centreville, West Centreville, Fairview, Gunston, and Fair Oaks assisted in the fire. The barn was also a storage area for a large amount of hay. An adjacent barn nearby housed five horses, all of which escaped unharmed. The homeowner was not at home when the fire broke out.
A neighbor saw the fire and called 911. His attempt to save the horses prior to firefighters arriving was unsuccessful. He was also able to alert a caretaker who was in the nearby house.
Damage is yet to be determined.
The fire is under investigation.
