Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a townhouse fire at approximately 10 p.m., Saturday, November 5, 2005, in the Lorton area of Fairfax County. The townhouse is located at 9120 Aspenpark Court.
First arriving firefighters reported fire coming from the second floor of the three-story townhouse. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately ten minutes. Two adults and two juveniles were displaced. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents. There were no reported injuries.
Damage is estimated at $50,000.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental; improper disposal of smoking materials in the bedroom caused the fire.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department would like to remind you of some important SAFETY TIPS when handling smoking materials:
- NEVER smoke in bed.
- Completely douse butts and ashes with water before throwing them away as they can smolder and cause a fire.
- Provide large, deep ashtrays with a center support for smokers. Check furniture for any dropped ashes before going to bed.
- Empty ashes into a fireproof container with water and sand.
- Keep smoking materials away from anything that can burn (i.e., mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, draperies, etc.)
