Mount Vernon Two-Alarm Apartment Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to an apartment fire at approximately 11:30 p.m., Sunday, November 13, 2005, in the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County. The three-story, garden apartment is located at 2621 Arlington Drive.

First arriving firefighters reported heavy fire showing from the third floor and attic of the structure. An additional alarm was requested, bringing over 60 emergency personnel to the scene. Firefighters conducted an aggressive attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes. All residents from the building evacuated prior to the arrival of firefighters. Twenty-two families have been displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families. There were no injuries.

Eleven units located at 2621 were damaged by the fire, the top four units received fire, water, and smoke damage, the remainder units below the fire floor received smoke and water damage.

Damage is estimated at $750,000.

According to fire investigators, an unattended candle caused the fire.
