Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a motel fire at approximately 6:30 a.m., Thursday, December 15, 2005, in the Woodlawn area of Fairfax County. The Southern Motel is located at 8257 Richmond Highway.
First arriving firefighters reported fire and smoke visible from the rear of an end unit of the motel. Firefighters requested a second alarm bringing over 60 emergency personnel to the scene.
Firefighters conducted an aggressive attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. Two firefighters were transported to the burn center in the Washington Hospital Center for non-life threatening burns. One firefighter was treated and released and the other admitted. The unit was unoccupied at the time of the fire. One adult female and two children were displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
Damage is estimated at $50,000.
The cause of the fire was accidental. The fire was electrical in nature originating below a wall-mounted heating ventilation and air conditioning unit.
