Two-Alarm Commercial Building Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a commercial building fire at approximately 12:40 a.m., Saturday, December 24, 2005, in the Merrifield area of Fairfax County. The commercial building, a Safeway store, is located at 7397 Lee Highway.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and reported a tractor trailer located at the rear of the Safeway store fully involved with smoke inside the structure. A second-alarm was requested bringing over 60 emergency personnel to the scene. Firefighters conducted an aggressive attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. There were no reported injuries.

The fire destroyed the tractor trailer and caused minimum smoke damage to the structure.

Damage is estimated at $150,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
