Annandale Fire Displaces 29 Residents

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a condominium fire at approximately 12:50 a.m., Friday, September 15, 2006, in the Annandale area of Fairfax County. The condominium, Heritage Woods I, is located at 4201 American Drive.

First arriving units reported heavy smoke from the front, and heavy fire from the rear of a three-level condominium. An additional alarm was dispatched, bringing over 60 emergency personnel to the scene. Several residents were rescued by firefighters using ground ladders.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes. Two adult residents were transported to local hospitals for non-life threatening injuries. Three firefighters were transported to Washington Hospital Center for non-life threatening injuries. Twenty adults and nine children were displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

Damage is estimated at $500,000.

According to fire investigators, the cause of the fire was accidental, improper disposal of smoking materials caused the fire.
