Fire Chief Michael P. Neuhard has selected Garret L. Dyer for promotion to Deputy Chief, effective October 28, 2006. Deputy Chief Dyer will be assigned as Chief Training Officer, Fire and Rescue Academy.
Deputy Chief Dyer began his career in the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department in 1986. His first assignment was Fire and Rescue Station 22, Springfield. He was promoted to Technician and transferred to Fire and Rescue Station 24, Woodlawn in 1988. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1991, Deputy Chief Dyer was assigned to Fire and Rescue Station 11, Penn Daw.
Deputy Chief Dyer was subsequently promoted to Captain I while assigned to the Fire and Rescue Academy, Captain II with assignment in the Fire Marshal's Office, Fire Prevention Division, as officer-in-charge, Systems Testing, and Fire Investigations. He was promoted to Battalion Chief in 2005, assigned as Chief, Hazardous Materials and Investigative Services, supervising investigations and hazardous materials enforcement.
As Chief Training Officer, Deputy Chief Dyer will be responsible for all training within the department conducted at the Fire and Rescue Academy and other sites throughout the county. This will include recruit schools, EMS training, and all other specialized training.
Deputy Chief Dyer is a certified National Registry Paramedic, NREMT-P, fire and explosive investigator, and fire inspector. He is a member of the Progressive Firefighters of Fairfax, International Association of Black Professional Firefighters, International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 2068, Firefighters and Paramedics, International Code Council, National Association of Fire Investigators, and International Association of Arson Investigators.
He is a member of Virginia Task Force One, Fairfax County's Urban Search and Rescue Team, and a certified Search Team Manager and Task Force Leader. He is a graduate of the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy, and is enrolled at the University of Maryland University College.
Deputy Chief Dyer lives in La Plata, Maryland, with his wife, and three children.
