Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire at approximately 5:20 p.m., Monday, October 15, 2007, in the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County. The two-story single-family home is located at 8223 Treebrooke Lane.
Firefighters encountered smoke from second floor windows and fire on the first floor foyer area of the home. A second alarm was requested, bringing over 60 emergency personnel to the scene. During the primary search, firefighters found a woman dead in a second floor bedroom. The fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes. No one else was home when the fire broke out. There were no other reported injuries. Two adults have been displaced. Red Cross is assisting the family.
Damage is estimated at $75,000.
According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. Improper disposal of smoking materials caused the fire.
The name of the deceased is being withheld until next of kin is notified. The cause of death is pending medical examiners results.
This makes the seventh fire fatality in Fairfax County for 2007.
