Fireplace Ashes Cause Mantua House Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire at approximately 11:40 p.m., Tuesday, December 18, 2007, in the Mantua area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 9205 Santayana Drive.

Firefighters reported heavy fire from an attached garage, second floor, and attic of the two-story home upon arrival. A second alarm was requested, bringing over 60 emergency personnel to the fire scene. Two adults and two children were home and alerted by smoke alarms sounding, and escaped unharmed.

The homeowner made several unsuccessful attempts to extinguish the fire before evacuating the structure and calling 911. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes. Two adults and two children were displaced. There were no injuries. Damage is estimated at $100,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. Improper disposal of fireplace ashes in the garage caused the fire.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department would like to remind you of some important SAFETY TIPS:

  • Call 911 immediately when a fire occurs. Residents should not attempt to extinguish the fire themselves.
  • Always discard fireplace ashes in a heavy metal container, moisten the ashes, and cover the container with a metal lid.
  • Never dump fireplace ashes until they have had at least FOUR DAYS to cool down.
