Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to an apartment fire, Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at approximately 5:55 p.m., in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. The garden apartment is located at 2661 Arlington Drive.
Firefighters saw smoke and fire coming from the rear of a second floor apartment upon arrival. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. The fire originated and was contained to a front bedroom within the apartment. There was no damage to any other apartment units. Two adults and two children have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. There were no injuries.
Damage is estimated at $75,000.
According to fire investigators, the fire was started by a young child igniting the bottom mattress of a bunk bed with a lighter.
- Keep matches and lighters out of sight, and out of reach.
- Teach young children that fire and fire tools are for grown-ups to use.
- Ask young children to tell you when they find matches and lighters, and then place them out of sight and out of reach.
