Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at approximately 5:30 a.m. in the Burke Centre area of Fairfax County. The home is located at 5936 Oak Leather Drive.
Firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the two-story, split-level home upon arrival. A smoke alarm sounded, alerting both occupants to the fire. A trapped occupant in a second floor bedroom was rescued by firefighters using ground ladders. The second occupant escaped without assistance. The fire was primarily contained to the first floor of the home. The fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes. Both occupants, an adult female and male, were transported to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Damage is estimated at $60,000.
According to fire investigators, the cause of the fire was accidental. A space heater too close to combustibles caused the fire.
