Fire Victim Identified

Nhien Duc Tran, 76, 13213 Lee Highway, has been identified as the victim of the house fire, Monday, February 16, 2009. According to the medical examiner, the cause of death is pending.

According to fire investigators, the cause of the fire was a heating appliance too close to combustibles. An electric heater and an electric blanket were both near the point of fire origin.

This is the second fire fatality for 2009.



Combustibles Too Close to a Heating Source Safety Tips


  • Keep at least three feet of clearance between your alternate heating source and anything combustible.
  • Do not store combustible materials in closed areas or near a heat source.

News Release 09-13
Date: February 17, 2009

Fatal Centreville House Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire at approximately 2:10 p.m., Monday, February 16, 2009, in the Centreville area of Fairfax County. The home is located at 13213 Lee Highway.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire through the roof and smoke from all sides of the two-story single-family home upon arrival. A second alarm was requested, bringing over 60 emergency personnel to the scene. Firefighters found a deceased adult male inside the house. Crews fought the fire from the inside until fire conditions severely deteriorated the roof, and it began to collapse in several areas. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. The fire originated in a second floor bedroom, spreading throughout the house. There were no other injuries. The home was a total loss. No one else was at home when the fire broke out.

Damage is estimated at $780,000. 

The victim’s name has not been released, pending next-of-kin notification. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
