Date: March 23, 2009
Firefighters placed 206 smoke alarms and 148 batteries in homes March 7, 2009, during a semi-annual smoke alarm initiative. The initiative is conducted every spring and autumn in conjunction with the switchover of daylight savings time.
Firefighters taking a proactive approach to fire safety, canvassed homes in their first due neighborhoods checking for working smoke alarms. A total of 354 smoke alarms were either installed or made functional by new batteries during the smoke alarm campaign.
The initiative was made possible by a grant from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs to Fairfax County. Smoke alarms play a vital role in reducing deaths and injuries from fire and have contributed to an almost 50 percent reduction in fire deaths since the 1970s. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms save lives and protect property.
Firefighters will conduct the fall campaign, Saturday, November 7, 2009.
