Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to an apartment fire, Sunday, September 6, 2009, at approximately 12:30 a.m., in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. The apartment is located at 4949 Manitoba Drive.
Firefighters saw heavy fire coming from a balcony window on a seventh floor apartment upon arrival. An additional alarm was requested bringing over 60 emergency personnel to the scene. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. Firefighters initiated an aggressive attack and contained the fire to the apartment of origin. It took firefighters several hours to remove the smoke from several floors of the apartment building. The occupants were allowed back into their apartments at approximately 4 a.m. Two adults have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. One resident was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Two firefighters received non-life threatening injuries; one was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, and the other to the Washington Burn Center.
Damage is estimated at $100,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
