Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire, Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at approximately 3:30 a.m. in the Annandale area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 7651 Royston Street.
Firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from all windows in the basement and the first floor of the ranch-style home. The home was fully involved with fire upon arrival of responding units. The fire was gas-fed, emanating from an inside gas meter in the basement. The first floor of the home collapsed a few minutes after arrival, resulting in firefighters not being able to immediately conduct a primary search of the home. Firefighters brought the bulk of the fire under control in approximately 45 minutes.
Damage is estimated at $300,000. The home is a complete loss.
Fire investigators are digging through the debris, and have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
