Springfield Commercial Building Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a commercial building fire at approximately 7:45 p.m., Thursday, February 11, 2010, in the Springfield area of Fairfax County. The structure, a vacant restaurant, is located at 7010 Old Keene Mill Road.

Firefighters encountered smoke showing from all sides and fire showing from the roof of the one-story building upon arrival. Firefighters also encountered a partial roof collapse rendering the building unstable. The fire was brought under control in approximately 60 minutes. Firefighters contended with extreme temperatures and deep snow piled next to the structure while fighting the fire. The Incident Commander struck a second alarm, bringing over 60 firefighters to the scene. There were no reported injuries.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire Hydrants/Snow Clearing

  • Clear snow away from fire hydrants in your neighborhood. Ask neighbors to adopt a fire hydrant and clear snow and ice away from all hydrants so that they are easily visible in the event of a fire. Residents are also reminded that parking is prohibited within 15 feet of a fire hydrant located along the curb line or edge of any public or private roadway. No special curb marking is required for enforcement.
  • Keep your driveway and walks clear so that firefighters and medics can reach your house if you need them.
