Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a church fire on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at approximately 10:45 a.m. The church, Highview Christian Fellowship Church, is located at 4100 Hunt Road in the West Annandale area of Fairfax County.
Firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke showing from the roof upon arrival. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes. The Incident Commander struck a second alarm, bringing over 60 firefighters to the scene. The fire was confined to the fellowship hall and day care center. Firefighters protected the sanctuary and vestibule by using an offensive, aggressive interior attack. The church operated a day care center with 20 children and 6 staff members present in the building at the time of the fire. All of the children were evacuated safely. Two adults were transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Units from Fairfax City also responded to the fire.
Damage is estimated at $500,000.
According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. The fire was caused by a malfunctioning microwave oven.
