Since early August 2009, 19 recruit firefighters from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department have been training to respond to fire suppression and emergency medical incidents, hazardous materials incidents, emergency vehicle extrications, swift water rescue, and confined space rescue. These firefighter recruits will officially become professional firefighters upon graduation. Additionally, all 19 firefighters are Advanced Life Support providers.
Chief Glenn A. Gaines (Ret.), Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Deputy United States Fire Administrator for the United States Fire Administration (USFA), will be the graduation keynote speaker. He is responsible for managing the United States Fire Administration, and the programs and training activities at the National Emergency Training Center.
Chief Gaines began his fire service career as a volunteer member of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. During his 37-year career, he served in numerous capacities, including Fire Marshal, Chief Training Officer, and Chief of Operations, culminating in his appointment as the Fairfax County Fire Chief from August 1991 until December 1998.
Chief Gaines holds a degree in Fire Administration and has authored a fire service text, contributed to several others, and written numerous articles for several trade publications. He has served as a faculty member at the United States Fire Administration’s (USFA) National Fire Academy, and is actively involved with organizations related to the professional development of fire and emergency services.
