Helen Z. Pittas, 60, 6200 block of Willowfield Way, Springfield, has been identified as the victim of the garage fire, May 1, 2010. The fire was intentionally set by the deceased.
The cause of death was smoke inhalation.
This is the sixth fire fatality for 2010.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a garage fire Saturday, May 1, 2010, at approximately 6:15 p.m., in the Franconia area of Fairfax County. The detached garage is located in the 6200 block of Villa Street.
Firefighters encountered heavy fire coming from the garage upon arrival. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and found a deceased woman inside the garage. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 10 minutes. There was no one else home when the fire broke out. There were no other injuries.
The name of the victim will not be released until next-of-kin has been notified. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
Damage is estimated at $1,000.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal's Office and the Police Department.
