Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department
News Release 10-80
Date: September 7, 2010
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department firefighters handily exceeded their goal of collecting $475,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and the "Fill the Boot" campaign over the Labor Day weekend. Firefighters, the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2068, and the Department of Public Safety Communications personnel collected more than $561,000, taking in more donations than any fire service organization in the country, surpassing the Houston Fire Department, last year's top collector.
All money will go to help support MDA services and research programs in the Washington, D.C. region, including outpatient clinics, Children's National Medical Center, Georgetown University Hospital, and the MDA camp in Leonardtown, Maryland. Firefighters and the fire service have a 56-year partnership with MDA, and have donated more than $425 million over the years.
Firefighters and organizers want to thank all residents and visitors in Fairfax County for their incredible generosity, and genuine compassion in helping those with muscular dystrophy.
