According to the National Fire Protection Association, overloaded electric outlets and faulty wires are the most common causes of holiday fires in homes. These types of fires can be just as dangerous with an artificial tree or a live tree. In an effort to increase Christmas tree safety, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department provides local tree vendors with "Fire Safety and Your Tree" safety cards.
