Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department fire investigators charged four juveniles in connection with the playground fire on February, 19, 2011, at Levelle Dupelle Community Park. All four were charged with destruction of property greater than $1,000 and destruction of property less than $1,000 in value, (18.2-137 Virginia Code), and unlawfully entering a Fairfax County park. Additionally, two juveniles were charged with vehicle tampering, (18.2-146 Virginia Code), and one juvenile was charged with grand larceny greater than $200, (18.2-95 Virginia Code).
Three of the juveniles were from the Hayfield area of Fairfax County, and the remaining juvenile was from Virginia Beach.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a playground fire, Saturday, February 19, 2011, at approximately 3:10 a.m., in the Lorton area of Fairfax County. The playground is located in the 6800 block of Newington Road, in the Levelle Dupelle Community Park.
Firefighters encountered playground equipment fully involved in fire upon arrival. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. The fire originated on the composite flooring on the playground. There were no injuries.
The playground equipment was a total loss, valued at approximately $15,000.
According to investigators, the fire was intentionally set and is under investigation.
