Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a townhouse fire, Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at approximately 6:10 p.m., in the Merrifield area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 3070 Southern Elm Court.
Firefighters encountered smoke and fire coming from the basement of the two-story end unit townhouse upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive interior fire attack and quickly brought the fire under control. Smoke alarms sounded and provided early warning for occupants. Nine occupants have been displaced, seven adults and two children. One adult was transported to INOVA Fairfax Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Red Cross is providing support.
Damage is estimated at $40,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
