For approximately five months, 28 recruit firefighters have been undergoing training to respond to fires, hazardous materials incidents, vehicle crashes and extrications, swift water rescue, confined space rescue, and emergency medical incidents. These firefighter/EMT recruits will officially become professional firefighters in Fairfax County upon graduation.
Chief Glenn A. Gaines (Ret.), Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Deputy United States Fire Administrator for the United States Fire Administration (USFA), will be the graduation keynote speaker. He is responsible for managing the USFA, and the programs and training activities at the National Emergency Training Center.
Chief Gaines began his fire service career as a volunteer member of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. During his 39-year career, he served in numerous capacities, including Fire Marshal, Chief Training Officer, and Chief of Operations, culminating in his appointment as the Fairfax County Fire Chief from August 1991 until December 1998. In May 2011, Chief Gaines was awarded the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Lifetime Achievement Award.
Chief Gaines holds a degree in Fire Administration and has authored a fire service text, contributed to several others, and written numerous articles for several trade publications. He has served as a faculty member at the USFA's National Fire Academy, and is actively involved with organizations related to the professional development of fire and emergency services.
