Virginia Task Force One (VATF-1), Fairfax County’s urban search and
rescue team, was activated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency,
Sunday afternoon, October 28, 2012. The 80-person, heavy task force
is staged at VATF-1’s headquarters and deployment center, 14725-H Flint
Lee Road, Chantilly.
VATF-1 consists of firefighters, paramedics, search and rescue specialists, structural engineers, physicians, hazardous materials specialists, planning and logistical staff, and canines and handlers. In addition to its regular complement of equipment, the team will also deploy with two inflatable boats, numerous PFD’s, and water rescue specialists. The team is self-contained and is capable of deploying for up to 14 days without resupply or additional support.
VATF-1 is funded by the federal government, paying for all personnel, equipment, and deployment costs.
