The 2013 Career Firefighter of the Year ceremony will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Public Safety Center, 4100 Chain Bridge Road, honoring Lieutenant Matthew P. Malof.
A 31-year veteran, Lieutenant Malof is viewed as the consummate paramedic and firefighter. He has supervised the training of dozens of paramedic interns over the years, helping to produce the best paramedics possible.
Previously selected for the A. Heath Onthank Award, Lieutenant Malof recently helped produce the Probationary Lieutenant Task Book, a superb guide for training new officers. His valued experience, high motivation, and can-do attitude have been the hallmark of Lieutenant Malof.
Lieutenant Malof has performed in a singularly outstanding manner throughout his career in all facets of being a paramedic/firefighter. His off-duty volunteerism includes: Central Virginia Burn Camp, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association Camp in Southern Maryland.
The Firefighter of the Year Award is the department's highest award, established in 1985 to provide special recognition for outstanding service and dedication that is in keeping with highest traditions of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Lieutenant Malof is the 28th recipient of the award.
Lieutenant Malof is assigned to Fire and Rescue Station 5, Franconia, and lives in Falls Church with his wife, Mary.
