Clifford Johns, 54, 8659 Venoy Court, has been identified as the deceased in the house fire, August 22, 2013. The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fatal Woodlawn Townhouse Fire
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department and Fort Belvoir units responded to a fatal townhouse fire, Thursday, August 22, 2013, at approximately 9:05 p.m., in the Woodlawn area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located at 8659 Venoy Court, in the Villages of Mount Vernon. The deceased is an adult male.
Firefighters encountered smoke and fire coming from the rear of the two-story, middle unit townhouse upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack in a fully involved second floor bedroom while simultaneously searching for occupants. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire in the bedroom and located a victim. He was transported to INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital and was later pronounced dead.
Firefighters found a smoke alarm; however, the smoke alarm was not mounted and did not activate. There was no fire damage to adjoining townhouses. The three occupants are being assisted by the Red Cross. There were no other injuries.
The fire is under investigation.
Damage is estimated at $50,000.
