Accidental Restaurant Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a restaurant fire in a shopping center Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at approximately 2:45 p.m., in the Tysons area of Fairfax County. The restaurant, China Wok, is located at 8395 Leesburg Pike.
Firefighters encountered heavy black smoke coming from the roof, and fire from the ventilation ducts upon arrival. Employees unsuccessfully attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack in the kitchen, roof, and ventilation areas and brought the fire under control in approximately 25 minutes. Firefighters also performed extensive overhaul and salvage operations throughout the restaurant. Approximately a dozen employees and customers escaped unharmed. About 20 employees and customers from adjoining businesses were evacuated, with the businesses reopening at about 6 p.m. The restaurant remains closed. There were no injuries.
Damage is estimated at $100,000.
According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. An uncontrolled grease fire in the kitchen caused the fire.
