Alexandria Area Garden Apartment Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a garden apartment fire Monday, May 19, 2014, at approximately 6:45 a.m., in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. The apartment is located at 6913 Mary Caroline Circle, Apartment H.
Firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the front and rear of the three-story apartment building upon arrival. Firefighters rescued eight occupants using ground ladders from several balconies within the apartment building. Firefighters also rescued two guinea pigs. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire in the kitchen. The majority of the fire damage was contained to the apartment of origin; however, there was minor damage to adjacent units and to the stairway. One adult female was transported to the Washington Hospital Burn Center with non-life threatening injuries. The occupants have been displaced. Red Cross Support was offered but declined.
Damage is estimated at approximately $100,000.
The fire originated in the kitchen and is under investigation.
