Fairfax County firefighters will provide backpacks and school supplies Thursday, August 28, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Fire and Rescue Station 11, Penn Daw, in Alexandria, Virginia.

Department personnel, the Progressive Firefighters of Fairfax County, Local 2068, Apple Federal Credit Union, Social Work Services-FCPS, and the Office of Private Public Partnerships (OP3) have been collecting backpacks and school supplies for several weeks and will distribute them to school children in Fairfax County and the Washington Metropolitan area. Through generous donations and support from area businesses, including Nationwide Credit Corporation, Modern Tech Solutions, Inc., SENTEL Corporation, PROMAX Realtors of Springfield, Integrity Applications Incorporated (IAI) Foundation, Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, Medocracy Inc., Kids R First, Aluminum Cans for Burned Children, Centreville Moose Lodge #2168, and the Rotary Club of Tysons Corner. Over 3,000 backpacks have been collected and filled with school supplies, an increase of 600 from last year.

Firefighters will coordinate the distribution of the backpacks to various Fairfax County public school administrators, local shelters, and nonprofits. For more information, please contact Captain II Willie Bailey at 571-641-0036.
