Intersection Preemption Signaling Devices Installed

Who:

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department

What:

Intersection Preemption Signaling Devices Installed

When:

Ongoing Through 2006

Where:

Multiple areas throughout Fairfax County

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has begun the installation of Opticom preemption signal systems throughout Fairfax County. A total of 19 intersections will be affected.

The preemption signal system allows apparatus to safely respond through intersections in a safe and expeditious manner. The safety improvement allows firefighters and paramedics to respond quicker and more safely. The preemptions system allows emergency personnel to provide the best service possible for the residents of Fairfax County.

Testing has shown that preemptions systems have negligible impact on the flow of traffic. The Virginia Department of Transportation has approved the installation of the preemption systems onto their signaling equipment.

The Opticom preemption system consists of three main components; a computer card placed in the existing signal control box, an emitter located in the emergency vehicle, and a detector located near the signal head, which activates the emitter.

Affected intersections include:

  • Richmond Highway and Armistead Road
  • Richmond Highway and Lukens Lane
  • Richmond Highway and Sherwood Hall Lane
